What are Bind-Runes?

Since the earliest times runes have been used we seem to have had bind-runes. This is a way of combining runes to focus their magical power. Two or more runes are super-imposed on each other to form a new unique pattern. This new shape is then used as a personal symbol or sometimes as a necklace or amulet. There are two main types of bind-rune:

  • Those made from a person's initials

  • Those made from combining specific runes to reflect their qualities

The first type are probably the most popular today whereby a person can construct a personal symbol out of their initials or sometimes their first name (provided it is no longer than 4 letters or so). This provides a unique way of identifying yourself which can be used on personal objects, on letters and these days even as your Windows wallpaper!

The second version of the bind-runes reflects their magical use. Runes are combined depending on the qualities which the person wishes to manifest. For example let us say that someone wished to show courage and strength combined with resilience and good judgement. This could be achieved by creating a bind-rune which merged Uruz (Ur) with Tiwaz (Tir) . Used as a necklace or amulet these two runes could then manifest their properties in the wearer's life.

An example of a modern bind-rune tattoo which includes Mannaz (Man), Pertho (Peorth) and Nauthiz (Nyd) runes:
