Reading

In Bernard King's Way of the Runes, read the short section ending chapter 1 entitled "The Mythical Origins of the Runes" found on page 16.

King seems less than convinced by the story of Odin's discovery of the runes as told in the Havamal, however this does not really matter. Whether it is literal truth or metaphor is in some ways irrelevant. The tale embodies much that matters to the runes and for that reason it is essential you know it and understand the symbolism behind it.

In chapter 3 "The Scope of Northern Magical Practice" read page 32 "The Runatal" to page 45 ending ".. personal system to draw upon."

Further Exercises

  1. It is one thing to read about Odin on Yggdrasil in the abstract, quite another to see it depicted. Therefore draw, paint or make a model of, Odin's discovery of the runes. Think about how he is dressed, how you see him posed, the expression on his face, the moment and in what form the runes come to him etc. If you really have no artistic or creative skills do a search for someone else's picture but it is better you attempt something of your own.

  2. Optional Essay - "The runes were found in an unknown place between life and death". Discuss
