Reading

Read the Rune School Topic - Are the Runes Evil?

Read the Rune School Topic - Do You Have to be a Specific Religion to Use the Runes?

As you will see the emphasis on the Norse gods is a concern to some people. The runes emerged from, and were used by the peoples of Northern Europe and therefore this belief system is integral to them. Many of those who use the runes will wish to follow a path worshipping the old Norse gods, but by no means all and it is not compulsory. What is required though is that you understand the norse deities, treat them with respect because even if you don't believe in them, others do, and be aware of which runes have links with particular gods.

Further Exercises

  1. There were a quite captivating series of television advertisements in Britain for a cellular phone network in which people were asked to nominate a historical figure (such as Einstein, Martin Luther King etc) they wished they could have had a television conversation with and to explain what they would say. Of the gods you have met in this, or the previous lecture, you should choose one with whom to imagine a conversation. Why have you chosen this god? Do you admire them or perhaps you want to put something to them? Remembering you are speaking to a god, how do you see the tone of the conversation. Include at least 4 questions which you would ask them.

  2. From the list of gods and goddesses in the exercises for the previous lecture choose one more god and one more goddess to research in the way you did before.
