Lesson 15 - Tests and ReadingComprehension Test
ReadingIn Freya Aswynn's Principles of Runes, read from the section starting "Basic Guidelines in Runic Meanings", on p 78 to Page 79. (this extract is available for registered students only at the Student Site). A good thing about Aswynn is that she recognizes how context can change the meaning of a rune. You have seen her method in operation with two runes and should understand how to apply it to the rest. In the lecture we briefly considered how spreads can be used to narrow rune meanings. It is possible to have theme-specific spreads, for example to design a spread solely for answering financial questions. In this case then only Aswynn's "In questions of finance" meanings would apply. Though Aswynn's list is quite simplistic, setting out meanings like this can be a good source for quick reference while learning. Students will undoubtedly be glad to know though that this is the last different set of rune meanings they will be asked to read on this course. Responsibility however now rests with you. By this stage in the course you should have formulated a pretty clear set of rune meanings for yourself. From the Rune Poems you have an idea of what the traditional meanings were. Now from Aswynn, King and Grimnisson we have seen examples of modern rune meanings. No two people will have exactly the same set of rune meanings because the runic journey is an inward one, and each person will have a unique set of rune interpretations reflecting their personality, interests and experiencies. As a reader's skill grows so will their personal meanings evolve. If you have not already done it though, you need to put your thoughts down on paper to draw together your ideas on the meaning of the runes and express them in a concrete form. Further Exercises
