Reading

As the topic of buying runes is one which few authors talk about, you should use this opportunity to do some further reading from the Poetic Edda. First read Rigsthula which tells how the god Heimdall first brought the runes to earth, then read Baldrs Draumar and see how Odin puts the runes to practical use.

Further Exercises

  1. Assume for now, that you will be buying your set of runes. This will be a very precious and personal object to you and hence great care needs to go into its choosing. Using the Rune School Resources pages as a starting pointing, and going elsewhere on the net from there as necessary, familiarize yourself with the different materials from which runes can be made. Consider each in terms of factors such as appearance, weight and feel to the touch. Decide which appeals to you. Investigate variations, so that, if you opt for stone, check out different types or stone, or if you go for wood, the appearance and feel of different types of wood. Don't treat this as a purely rational process, listen to your intuition. Is there a tree for example that has particularly strong associations or childhood memories?

  2. Use your local phone directories and local knowledge to put together a list of craftspeople in your area who make runes. Visit at least one to see their wares first hand. Were you impressed? Did you like what you saw? If not, think about why you didn't and what you would have wanted to see.
