Answers Lesson 8 - Tests and Reading
Comprehension Test
-
What must any true master of the runes achieve?
a personal understanding and feel for their meanings
-
Why did certain things get chosen to be used as rune glyphs?
because they had particular significance to the culture of the
day
-
Which rune should anyone who has faced bankruptcy or experienced
a period of poverty in their lives be able to grasp the meaning of?
Fehu (Feoh). But, whilst that is a straight response based on what
we said in the lecture, it is not the ONLY possible answer. None of
these name a rune questions just have one answer and determining if
an answer is right depends on how you interpret the question and how
you regard the rune meanings. You could equally have replied to this
question by using the Othala (Ethel) rune because anyone who has learned
the insubstantial nature of portable wealth as represented by Fehu
(Feoh) will also have probably come to value real estate, ancestral
lands handed on from generation to generation etc.
-
Name something which it is believed is depicted by a rune glyph
Well many possible answers but some of those you could have given
as a result of what we said in the lecture are tribal banner, need
fire, cart's wheel. You could also have said icicle from an earlier
lecture
-
Name a rune relating to travel or transport?
Obvious ones are Raido (Rad) and Ehwaz (Eh)
-
Name a rune suggesting natural destructive powers
Again obvious ones are Hagalaz (Haegl) and Thurisaz (Thorn) but
there are other possibilities including Isa (Is)
-
Name a rune relating to fertility
Obvious ones are Fehu (Feoh), Inguz (Ing) and Berkana (Beorc)
-
Name a rune of things slowing down or stopping?
The simple answer if you take the "or" to mean both these things
is Isa (Is) but if you take it as meaning "either" then there are
numerous runes of completion such as Dagaz (Daeg) or Jera (Ger) you
could also have chosen. We deliberately phrased this question in an
ambiguous way to illustrate the point of not taking things at face
value. There is usually more than one way to answer any question about
rune meanings.
-
Name a rune of protection
Easy ones are Algiz (Eohl) and Thurisaz (Thorn) but there are others
etc We hope you have got the message by now.
-
Name a rune relating to home, family, clan and nation
We could only think of Othala (Ethel) for this one since we deliberately
made the question so specialized, but if you have an alternative proposal
we would love to hear it
