In the sample reading used in the lecture, what was the effect of the Isa (Is) rune on Gebo (Gyfu)? The cooling influence of Isa (Is) cooled the passion of the other rune and so put the brake upon anything beyond friendship

Further Exercises
David has an idea for a new on-line company. Having pitched the idea he has found a potential investor but they want a 36% share of the company. Moreover, having seen so many internet start-ups fail recently, David is getting cold feet. He is losing confidence in the viability of his concept and is unsure whether his potential investor is offering a good deal. Before David gives up on his new company altogether he decides to consult the runes
What question should he ask? He obviously wants to know about the prospects of his company so the question needs to focus on this but equally he doesn't want to make it too specific as to shut off information about other ventures or additional fa ctors the runes could bring to his notice. We would suggest he should ask about business opportunities with particular reference to this project
What are the key factors with respect to his enquiry and the choice of spread? David is obviously very concerned about outcomes so the spread used needs a predictive element. He has an important decision to make so it needs to be a focussed spread with not too many runes so he doesn't face information overload. We would go for 3-5 runes probably preferring 5 simply because of the added information this could offer.
Which spread would you use? Very much a matter of personal choice. Actually we would probably use something that hasn't been taught on this course which isn't very helpful! A 3-rune spread like the Standard Spread would work though and perhaps the Cross of Thor with its two Predictive positions might offer the sort of reassurances that David is seeking.
-
David decides to use the Staves of Wyrd spread. In view of your comments above, do you think this is a good choice?
It wouldn't have been our first choice, but it is a compact versatile spread which is usable for many purposes including this one. As we said in the Spreads lectures, spread choice is very much a personal decision and everyone will have different preferences.

The reading produces the following result:
What have you learned about David?
The appearance of Nauthiz (Nyd) in the Past is very interesting. It suggests a painful experience previously which from the context of the question and reading we can assume related to business. However Nauthiz is the Great Teacher though its lessons are not pleasant ones and this period would have strengthened David. It does explain much of his lack of confidence in himself though and his reluctance to move forward.
What advice would you offer him?
Based on Jera (Ger) and Feoh (Fehu), we would advise him to make careful preparations. To thoroughly investigate the ground he is planting the seed in (both his market and the investment company) and to proceed cautiously and carefully. Not to expect instant riches but to recognize there will be a lot of work involved and he will have to tend his crop (the company) with care but if he does, there is every possibility of success with the company generating money. However he should remember he is entering a very volatile market and that money is lost as easily as it is won. He must ensure that he both invests money back into the business and also into other things also, diversifying his investment profile should the worst happen.
Should he go ahead with his company?
Actually, that is a decision for him alone. You as reader can just put the information before him and he has to weigh up the options. The Jera (Ger) / Fehu (Feoh) combination is a strong one and suggests a harvest awaits if he makes the right moves, though nothing is guaranteed in life. The runes suggest he has the right qualities, skills and motivation to generate profit. He has to decide if he goes ahead. In his place, with this reading, we would though.
You have completed this exercise. If you got any of the comprehension answers wrong go back and look at the lesson again to work out why this happened before moving on and do not take more than one Lesson a week.
