Lesson 18 - Answers Tests and Reading
Comprehension Test
What does any given event have It has causes and consequences
In the picture below what weapons is used and what leads you to think this?
![[Image showing message in two ways]](../../graphics/olafkills.gif)
The weapon used is a spear and we derive this from our experience in how spears are normally depicted and our understanding of the events of the picture which make us see this as a weapon. However, this is a question of our perception and should not be thought of as definitive. We have no way of knowing for sure that the author didn't use an arrow to hi-light the King whose crown has blown off in the wind. Any interpretation whether of a picture or a rune spread is an individual perception rather than a definite truth.
What is the third step in a rune reading? Drawing the runes and laying them in their spread positions
If Haugrim was unpopular what would this tell us about his ability as King? Actually this is a fascinating one and we put this question here so we could re-examine the point we made in the lecture. Once again it comes down to question of perceptions. If you take the line (as we did in the lecture) that the job of a King is about running a state then whether or not he is popular does not really matter and so tells us nothing about his ability as a King. If however you see the role of a King as ruling over people then the ability to lead and motivate and inspire his subjects becomes more important in a monarch. In this sense then his unpopularity could indicate he was not a good King. As you should see now everything comes down to individual views and there are always counter arguments that can be put.
What are the four functions a rune can perform? Advisory, predictive, descriptive and representative
If for two clients you were to ask the same question, use the same spread and receive the same runes would your interpretations be identical? No. It is theoretically possible that they could be in the same way it is theoretically possible to be killed by an asteroid however to all intents and purposes we can discount it. Even clients who superficially appeared to be in similar situations would have different factors also impacting on them, such as one of them having a sister and the other not, which would subtly change the influences upon the situation and hence the interpretation.
To understand interpretation, what do we have to accept? That there is no /single/ truth. Something which should be becoming very clear now!
Why is it better to give more information than necessary if you are unsure of meaning? Because the client can filter out information that is not relevant
When is the Odin's Rune spread used? When a decision is required in a matter of immediate concern
If your intuition fails with respect to the meaning of a particular rune, what other approach could you adopt? You could adopt a procedural approach, looking at the rune its role etc. However as was said in the lecture this is a far from ideal way to tackle the runes. Learn to trust and develop your intuition.

Further Exercises
In matters of relationships, Isa (Is) is usually not a good sign, indicating possible blockages or cooling of the emotions which drive a relationship. It would appear to confirm her fears about them moving apart and may at worst signal the end of the relationship. Marjory needs to look at events with a cool head and see what, if anything, she can do to salvage things.
-
In this context Gebo (Gyfu) is a positive sign It suggests a good relationship is still possible though this is not to deny the problems Marjory has identified. This is a rune of sharing and balance and Marjory needs to see how they can bring the harmony back into their relationship. Since a key aspect of Gebo (Gyfu) is partnership, Marjory needs to work with Richard in addressing and resolving their problems.
You have completed this exercise. If you got any of the comprehension answers wrong go back and look at the lesson again to work out why this happened before moving on and do not take more than one Lesson a week.
