Reading

In Freya Aswynn's Principles of Runes, read from the section starting "Basic Guidelines in Runic Meanings", on p 78 down to the bottom of p 76 which ends ".. sudden beginning of better things".

One of the good things about Aswynn is that she recognizes how context can change the meaning of a rune. This mirrors what we briefly considered in the lecture about how spreads can be used to narrow rune meanings. It is possible to have theme-specific spreads, for example to design a spread solely for answering financial questions. In this case then only Aswynn's "In questions of finance" meanings would apply. Though Aswynn's list is quite simplistic, it is a good source for quick reference while learning. Students will undoubtedly be glad to know though that this is the last different set of rune meanings they will be asked to read on this course.

Further Exercises

  1. Using at least five runes, design a spread of your own. Pay attention to the following:

    • Shape of the rune spread

    • Function of the runes. You should have at least one description, advisory and predictive rune

    • Titles of positions

    • The aim of the spread. Some possible aims are - to find out where something went wrong in the past, to deal with a present crisis and to chose a new direction in life. Or, you are free to devise an aim of your own
