Further Exercises
Using the translation guidelines contained in the lesson, what modern words do these rune names become? (hint - remember it was the sound of the word that was important and this is likely to have been preserved even if the spelling may be different)
Daeg?
"g" becomes "y"
"ae" becomes "a"
Hence it becomes "day"
Haegl?
"g" becomes "y"
"ae" becomes "a"
Hence it becomes "Hayl" which in modern English is "Hail"
Wynn?
"y" becomes "i"
Hence it becomes "Winn" or in modern English "win"
- Take any two syllable word (MAP, ARM etc) and design a glyph representing each separate sound using only straight lines in a similar way to this example
Since we gave you an example we will assume you didn't have any problems with this. It was really only to give you a first hand taste of how rune glyphs may form. Actually we used a horizontal line in our sample glyph and you may well have done the same (we didn't impose this restriction on you since it would have only complicated your life further, and we didn't see the need), but with real rune glyphs horizontal lines were not possible either, since cutting them into wood causes a problem with the grain of the wood.
