How to Search

Simply type the words you are looking for into the box below and press the "search" button to begin the search. You can alter the way the search output appears, or whether the search is for all the words you specify or any of them, using the little drop-down boxes.

Advanced Searches

The search engine used at the Rune School is quite sophisticated and the more detailed your query is, the more relevant the resultant output will be. However the search engine can also handle more advanced searches such as these

Translated: require Norns, require wyrd

Finds "The Norns are closely related to Wyrd" and "One way Wyrd operates is via the Norns"
Does not find the lowercase "norn", nor the abbreviated "the Norn Verdandi".

Note that if the search terms are put in lower case the search engine will return any results it finds that are either in upper or lower case. However if upper case is used in the query only results in upper case will be returned

Translated: forbid magic, require runes

Finds "The Runes are used for divination", "The Runes were discovered by the god Odin", and lowercase "runes-divination@egroups.com".
Does not find "Runes are used for magic and divination".

Translated: prefer Odin, require Tyr

Finds "The god Tyr", "The gods Tyr and Odin", and "Odin is sometimes thought to have replaced Tyr as chief god".

Documents with both terms appear higher in the list.

Translated: require the phrase "Rune magic"

Finds "Rune magic".
Does not find "rune magic" nor "the runes were used for magic also".

Translated: require odin (case insensitive), require words starting with "rune"

Finds "odin@runeschool.werewood.com", "Odin found the runes", "Some runic charms are quoted by Odin in the Havamal".

The asterisk is a wildcard representing any four or fewer characters.

Translated: require Tyr (case sensitive), require pictures, forbid magic, prefer images

First lists "pictures and images of Tyr", then "pictures of Tyr".
Does not list lowercase "picture of Tyr", nor forbidden "The use of magic by the gods is seen in many poems and pictures such as the one of Tyr".

Translated: ignores common words like where, is, and the - requires words containing "rune"

Finds "rune", "prunes"(!), and "runes-divination".

To suppress the ignore feature, use quotes, as in "Where is the *rune*?".

The asterisk is a powerful search tool, but has some limitations. It cannot span words - that is, the query "powerfu*earch" would not match the first sentence of this paragraph - and it can represent at most four letters or numbers. To avoid overly broad searches, the asterisk can only be used in words or phrases which have at least three alpha-numeric characters. A search for "th*" would be ignored.
