Spreads Database

Introduction

Though to some traditionalists, the use of spreads is something which has echoes of Tarot and is therefore to be discouraged, spreads are widely used by 21st century rune readers. In order to make the finding of appropriate spreads easier, the Rune School has produced this searchable database.

Please note this is an on-going project and we are adding new spreads as and when we have time to.

Spreads are attributed to the author in whose book we first found them. This is not ideal but it provides a source of reference for those who want to follow up the spread further. We would advise you to consult the original book where listed, as in most cases this will have further explanation along with examples of the spread in use. Where we are notified about alternative authorship of spreads we will investigate.

Experienced users may now search the Spreads database but first time users should read on to familiarise themselves with the search categories.

Search Categories

Number of Runes

This one is fairly self explanatory. The more runes in a spread generally the harder it is to use and the less suitable for beginners it is. However more runes also usually equals more detail and so this must be balanced.

Spread Focus

While all the spreads in use today are modern, since we cannot be sure that the spread listed in Tacitus was definitely being used for a rune reading, nonetheless some spread authors go out of their way to try to honor and reflect the Norse mythology in the design of their spreads. For some people this will be important whereas others will not care.

Spread Function

Not all spreads are equally applicable to all tasks. We have divided up spreads into various categories and classified each spread according to a "main function" which it is best for. However our database considers other uses also which a spread fits and so result output may well include spreads whose "main function" as listed is not consistent with the search term but for which we consider a secondary use is.
