Virtual Campus

The Virtual Campus is a unique piece of software developed by the Rune School. As well as the publically available Rune School information it grants our students access to more specialist information we would not carry on the main site for fear of confusing the casual visitor.

Using a very simple interface based on a map of buildings, users are able to navigate its many features. Options are logically arranged, so that, for example, lessons and related teaching materials are accessed through the Class Room building.

Some key features of the Campus include:

• An internal mailing system allowing communication with staff and other students as well of the receipt of ordinary email in a user's Campus account.
• Message Boards for discussion of issues.
• A comprehensive library of links to relevant material on the web (considerably more detailed than our public links page).
• A Noticeboard for announcement to students.
• Live Chatroom enabling conversations with staff and other Campus users, along with direct teaching and scheduled debates.
• Special offers on rune-related products through the Campus shop, which suppliers only wish to make available to students.
• A suite of programs to help students test their knowledge of the rune names and the order of the runes. We have two of these available on our main website but a further four are restricted to just Campus users.

Every Rune School student should gain from the extensive facilities of the Campus. However new courses, such as our shortly-to-be-launched, Foundation Course, will be designed with the Campus in mind, so as to get the best from it.

All new features added to the Rune School website will be made directly compatible with the Campus and considerable further development is planned of its facilities.

For the School the Virtual Campus offers a cost-effective means of communicating with students and offering them specialised services, thus maximising the use we make of our limited resources.

It should ensure future students feel less isolated and so help build a greater sense of community. Our students will benefit from features that we are not making more widely available.

Though primarily created to meet the needs of our staff and studcents, the School believes the Virtual Campus may be of wider interest to runic scholars and will be investigating means to grant them access.
