Course Materials

In order to undertake the course students will require two things, the course texts and a set of runes. They will also need regular access to a web browser. The course has been tested with both Netscape and Internet Explorer.

Two of the course books are compulsory and the last is optional. Though you are recommended to buy it, nonetheless it is possible to survive without an Edda translation, using those available on the net. We believe though you will find your own translation of the Poetic Edda an invaluable resource in your runic studies and that it will thus more than repay the outlay.

Students should ensure they have access to the two compulsory course books before starting the course, but they do not have to read them until instructed to do so. It is possible to purchase these books from Amazon.com via our books page and doing so will help the School.

The three course books are:

The Elements of the Runes, Bernard King, Element Books, 1993
ISBN 1-86204-037-0
This book is compulsory

Note some students have experienced difficulties obtaining this book. If Amazon do not have it. Try:

Principles of Runes, Freya Aswynn, Thorsons, 2000
ISBN 0-7225-3883-9
This book is compulsory
The Poetic Edda, translated by Carolyne Larrington, Oxford University Press, 1996
ISBN 0-19-283946-2
This book is optional

With respect to the runes themselves, students may use rune cards or rune stones/tablets, but not rune dice. Students will require a 24/25 rune set depicting the Elder Futhark. It is not necessary to purchase or make the runes before the course begins but they will be required by the 14th lesson.
